Hi Kindergarten Families!
Here is what's going on in Kindergarten this week:
New Theme: “Monsters and Wild Things”! Our book we will be reading is “Where the Wild Things Are”. This theme is a great way to discuss the concepts of “Fiction” vs. “Non-Fiction” which we will be comparing through a variety of books and charting the differences between each genre. We will also talk about the “characters”, “setting”, “problem” and “solution” in each book that we read. While reading with your child at home, please ask them to identify these story elements in their favorite stories.
Reading: Students will be reading "Kit” and focusing on the “_it” word family (ie: bit, lit, fit)
Word of the Week: "here”
Writer's Workshop: Our hard working writers have completed their very first books! Each of these narrative stories have a beginning, middle and an end and are complete with a beautiful handmade cover. The instructions of how to make these books was very guided, but the writing was all done independently and we are very proud of the way that the students used sight words and "sounded out" spelling to create their sentences. Please have your child read these books to you and congratulate them on their hard work! Next week we will begin writing fictional monster themed stories during Writers Workshop.
Math: Students are using dice and 5-Frames to practice the concept of "counting on". You can do this at home with your child by rolling a dice or just saying a number and asking your child to count on from that number. They will also continue to practice adding and subtracting with the use of a number line.
The students have been enjoying all of our Halloween inspired songs and chants in class such as "5 Little Pumpkins", "5 Little Bats" and "Halloween Cat"- ask your child to sing these songs to you at home!
We will not have Centers on Monday Oct. 30th so we will not need any classroom volunteers that day. On Tuesday, Oct 31st we will have our Halloween class party from 9:30-10:20, followed by the kindergarten parade at 10:35. Our centers will start at 9:30 instead of 8. Please tell me if that time does not work with your schedule, if you are normally there for centers on Tuesday. I think many parents will be helping.
Have a great week,
Mrs. Sandman
